He invested in a label called Atlas Records, but they couldn't make a hit, even with Nat King Cole on the roster. When that didn't pan out, he switched over to the music business. But he had stars in his eyes and set out for Los Angeles in 1939 to work in the movie business. His father was a Jewish immigrant from Galicia in Eastern Europe. TSIOULCAS: Art Rupe was born into a working-class family in Pittsburgh in 1917. LITTLE RICHARD: (Singing) Wop bop a loo bop a lop bom bom. NPR culture correspondent Anastasia Tsioulcas has this remembrance.ĪNASTASIA TSIOULCAS, BYLINE: Art Rupe was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2011 for helping to shape the sound of rock 'n' roll and for signing artists like Little Richard. Art Rupe founded Specialty Records, the label that launched the careers of Little Richard and Sam Cooke and helped make R&B popular with white audiences. One of the pioneering businessmen behind rock 'n' roll has died.
